THANK YOU to everyone who has shared our campaign, donated in honor of a book that impacted their lives, and believed in our mission of making literature accessible to all. Every dollar and every share matters. We cannot do this work without your support, and we deeply appreciate it.

We'd also like to thank the Catalogue for Philanthropy for hosting our campaign, and one of our Board members, who generously matched all #GivingTuesday donations, up to a total of $2,000.

Remember the last book that made a tremendous difference in your life? Now imagine that same level of impact for a young person seeing their own life reflected in literature in a meaningful way.

We know that literacy is essential for a child to succeed. Reading is about more than literacy, however. The books we remember most give us a new perspective on ourselves and introduce us to different cultures and worldviews. Everyone deserves access to that experience.

In the last five years, PEN/Faulkner has donated more than 20,000 books to young people across DC. Many of the students we serve start building their own libraries with the books we give them. Many more are inspired by the authors we connect them with – not just as readers, but as writers in their own right, too.

A lifetime habit of reading and writing often begins with one great book. In honor of one book that changed your life, would you pay it forward?

Through our education programs, we are connecting classrooms with authors virtually as COVID-19 continues to pose challenges to the students, educators, and schools we work with. Our team commits to:

  • Listening and responding to our community’s real-time needs;
  • Reaching remote and isolated students through online sessions; and
  • Donating books to students who cannot participate virtually.

With your support, we can get more than 3,000 culturally relevant books directly into the hands of students over the next year. We can also connect those students with authors who inspire them and give them the tools they need to tell their own stories.

One great book costs only $15. Let’s make an impact for a whole generation.
